OTC-Thruster
As part of the OTC Thruster project, which is within the innovation field of OTC Subsea Mobility & Autonomy, a quiet and low-vibration hubless drive system is to be researched and tested. The task arises partly due to the highly sensitive sensors installed on underwater vehicles, which can be disturbed by hydroacoustic noise, and partly from the goal to reduce ocean pollution, explicitly including noise.
The high complexity of the project stems from various boundary conditions, such as potential pressure neutrality or the modularity of the overall system. This goal is to be achieved through intensive and interdisciplinary collaboration between industry and university. The system and motor development by Kraken Power GmbH, the propeller design by the Chair of Turbomachinery, and the converter design by the Chair of Power Electronics and Electrical Drives are closely integrated to meet the challenging objectives. Different propeller designs will be simulated and optimized, suitable electric motors with housings and converters with high switching frequencies and appropriate filters will be designed. Testing will be conducted to investigate the impact of various measures on the goal of low emissions. This project will enhance competencies and train young scientists and engineers.
